Recommended Lijiang hotel and guide

Lijiang is just 2 hours from Old Theatre Inn and a popular tourist town that offers a range of options for travelers. Originally a Naxi market town, the Old Town of Lijiang has expanded rapidly in recent years as more Chinese tourists pour in. There are some beautiful hotels and our favorite is the Zen Garden on Lion Hill. This intimate boutique inn is run by a local woman and her German husband. The gardens and decore are among the best of any small hotel in China, with friendly English-speaking staff, great buffet breakfasts and spectacular views of the Old Town. For reservations, please contact Sam at Old Theatre Inn.

Besides taking in the Old Town, there are great hikes in nearby hills and Jade Dragon Glacier, day trips to the villages of Shuhe and Baisha as well as horse riding. Our recommended Guide is Keith Lyons, a very experienced New Zealander who has spent many years living in Lijiang. You can read more about him on our guides page.

There are many operators of Lijiang tours so by speaking with us first, we can better understand how to recommend the best providers for you at no extra cost.

Welcome to Shaxi Yunnan China - a cultural treasure of the ancient Tea Horse Road

Located halfway from Lijiang to Dali, Shaxi Yunnan is home to a beautifully preserved traditional way of life that offers a glimpse into a forgotten era. Shaxi has been protected from mass tourism due to its relative distance from popular destinations in Yunnan. But a new highway has made the driving distance from Dali to Shaxi or Lijiang just 90 minutes. The local government, keen to protect Shaxi's unique cultural heritage, is working with a conservation team that aims to create a sustainable travel strategy for the valley, encouraging activities that provide ownership opportunities for local families.
